SFW Dakimakura Design Ideas: Pose, Outfit & Background

By DakiCustomize Production Team Last updated

Start with the version of the character you like

An outfit can do a lot of the storytelling. Think of a favorite jacket, stage costume or everyday look, then identify which details should remain recognizable.

Choose two or three priorities. A distinctive collar, hair accessory and expression may matter more than squeezing every reference into one drawing.

If you're still choosing an artist, use the commissioning guide to discuss the scope before work starts.

Describe the pose instead of saying “nothing suggestive”

Different people interpret that phrase differently. Give the artist positive direction as well as limits.

For example: “Fully dressed in the reference outfit, relaxed expression, one hand holding a book. Please avoid revealing clothing, suggestive gestures and emphasis on intimate areas.”

That's a brief example, not a requirement for every design. You might prefer a cheerful wave, a performance pose or a quiet resting scene. Let the artist explain what works in the available space.

Check the sketch in the actual cover outline. A pose that reads clearly on a square reference can become cramped in a tall frame.

Let the background support the character

A simple color field, stars or a small character-related motif can leave the face and clothing easier to read. Decide whether text is genuinely useful. Long quotes and tiny decorative labels may distract from the illustration.

Review the artwork preparation checklist before approving the final export. Technical checks don't decide whether an image meets a particular content policy.

For a gift or a shared space, ask the recipient what they would actually feel comfortable displaying. Don't assume that your definition of SFW matches theirs.
