Use mild detergent, avoid bleach and fabric softener, and air dry fully before refitting. Follow any specific care instructions supplied with your cover.
Before You Wash
This guide covers our custom dakimakura pillowcases, not the inner pillow. Remove the insert and follow its own cleaning instructions separately.
Check the seams and zipper for damage, empty the cover, and turn it inside out. Gently close the zipper before either hand or machine washing to help reduce snagging. Keep loose fabric clear of the teeth and do not force a sticking slider. Keep jewellery, rough towels, hooks, and other snagging items away from the fabric. How to Hand Wash a Dakimakura Cover
- Prepare cold water. Use a clean basin large enough to move the cover without packing it tightly. Add a small amount of mild, bleach-free detergent according to its instructions.
- Wash gently. Immerse the cover and move it through the water with your hands. Avoid scrubbing, twisting, or pulling the fabric. Do not leave it soaking for hours.
- Rinse thoroughly. Replace the water and gently press the cover until the detergent is rinsed out.
- Remove excess water. Support the wet cover as you lift it. Roll it in a clean towel and press gently; do not wring it.
Can You Machine Wash a Dakimakura Cover?
Yes. For DakiCustomize covers, use cold water, a gentle cycle, and a laundry bag. A bag reduces contact with other items but does not make rough washing suitable.
- Turn the cover inside out, close the zipper gently, and place it in a zippered mesh bag with room for the fabric to move.
- Wash separately from jeans, towels, hook-and-loop fasteners, and exposed hardware. Do not overload the drum.
- Use mild detergent without bleach or fabric softener. Choose a low spin speed where your machine allows it.
- Remove the cover promptly after the cycle and reshape it gently for drying.
For another brand's cover, follow that maker's instructions rather than assuming the same machine settings apply.
Dry Without Heat or Stretching
Air dry in a shaded, ventilated place. Spread the cover across a clean drying rack so the weight is supported; avoid suspending the wet fabric from two small corners. Keep it away from heaters and direct sunlight.
Skip the tumble dryer and iron for routine care. Do not stretch the cover tightly to remove creases. Drying time depends on airflow and humidity: check the seams and zipper area before putting the insert back. Store it only when completely dry; our cover storage guide covers rotation between uses.
Stains and Washing Frequency
Blot fresh spills with a clean cloth rather than rubbing. Test a little diluted mild detergent on a hidden area first, then treat the spot gently and rinse. Avoid strong stain removers or bleach as an improvised fix.
Wash according to use, sweat, spills, and visible dirt rather than a fixed calendar. Daily-use covers usually need cleaning more often than display covers. General fabric-care guidance from the American Cleaning Institute also recommends following care labels and testing stain treatments on an inconspicuous area.
