The Ultimate Dakimakura Washing & Care Guide (How to Protect 2WAY Tricot)

By DakiCustomize Production Team Last updated

⚡ TL;DR (Dakimakura Care Cheat Sheet)

  • The Golden Rule: Always separate the printed cover from the PP Cotton insert before washing. Never wash the heavy inner pillow!
  • Best Method: Gentle cold-water Hand Washing is the safest way to prevent fabric pilling (snags) on 2WAY Tricot.
  • Machine Washing (Risky): If you must use a machine, turn the cover inside out, place it in a fine mesh laundry bag, and use a delicate/cold cycle.
  • Detergent: Use mild, bleach-free liquid detergent. NO bleach, NO fabric softeners.
  • Drying: Air dry only! Keep away from direct sunlight and NEVER put it in the dryer (heat destroys sublimation ink and spandex fibers).

Why Dakimakura Care is Different from Regular Bedding

As a custom anime merch printer, we use high-heat dye-sublimation to bind rich, vibrant RGB colors directly into the polyester fibers of your dakimakura. While this makes the print incredibly durable against fading, the physical fabric itself—especially luxury materials—requires special attention.

Many collectors assume they can toss their $60 custom cover into the laundry like a standard cotton bedsheet. This is a critical mistake. If you want your custom dakimakura to remain ultra-soft and vibrant for years, you must treat it like high-end lingerie or delicate cosplay apparel.

Fabric Type Durability & Risk Factors Recommended Wash Method
2WAY Tricot
(Premium)
Highly elastic and silky. Extremely prone to "pilling" (little fuzz balls) or snags if caught on zippers or rough machine agitators. Strictly Hand Wash (Cold Water)
Peach Skin
(Standard)
Woven, non-stretch micro-fabric. Very durable and resistant to snags and wear. Hand Wash or Gentle Machine Wash

The Ultimate Taboo: Why Washing Machines Destroy 2WAY Tricot

2WAY Tricot gets its famous 4-way stretch from a high percentage of spandex/elastane blended with polyester. This makes it incredibly soft, but structurally fragile when wet.

Standard washing machines use central agitators and aggressive spinning to clean clothes. If a 2WAY Tricot cover rubs against a stray zipper, a rough towel, or the plastic drum of the machine at high speeds, the spandex threads snap. This creates pilling (surface fuzz), which permanently ruins the smooth, cool-to-the-touch sensation of the pillow.

The Print Shop Flow: How to Safely Hand-Wash Your Cover

If you want to maintain that "day-one" premium feel, hand-washing is mandatory. Here is the safest process:

  1. Unzip and Separate: Remove the cover from your PP Cotton insert. Turn the cover completely inside out to protect the printed artwork.
  2. Prepare the Bath: Fill a clean bathtub or large basin with cold or lukewarm water (never hot). Add a small amount of mild, bleach-free liquid laundry detergent. Avoid powdered detergents as they can leave abrasive residue.
  3. Soak and Massage: Submerge the cover. Gently knead and massage the fabric with your hands. Do not wring, twist, or aggressively scrub the fabric, as stretching it while wet can warp the shape of a 160x50cm cover. Let it soak for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill with clean cold water. Gently press the cover to push the soap out. Repeat until the water runs completely clear.
  5. Press Out Water: Do not twist to dry! Press the cover against the side of the tub to squeeze out excess water, or roll it up inside a clean, dry bath towel to absorb the moisture.

Machine-Washing (The High-Risk Alternative)

We get it—hand-washing a 160cm piece of fabric is tedious. If you absolutely must use a washing machine, you have to create a "defense system" for the fabric:

  • Step 1: Turn the cover inside out and zip it up.
  • Step 2: Place it inside a fine-mesh laundry wash bag. The bag must be large enough so the cover isn't crushed, but tight enough to prevent it from rubbing against the machine walls.
  • Step 3: Wash it completely alone. Do not wash it with jeans, towels, or anything containing zippers/buttons.
  • Step 4: Select the most delicate, gentle cycle available, using strictly cold water.

Drying Your Dakimakura: NO HEAT ALLOWED

Never, under any circumstances, put a dakimakura cover in the tumble dryer. Heat will permanently damage the spandex in 2WAY Tricot and can cause sublimation ink to reactivate and blur (ghosting).

The Air-Dry Method: Hang the cover indoors or in a shaded area outside. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, as extended UV exposure can fade the RGB dye-sublimation ink over time. Because the fabric is moisture-wicking polyester, it usually air-dries completely in just a few hours.

💡 Storage Tip: If you are swapping covers and need to store one, ensure it is 100% bone-dry. Fold it loosely and store it in a cool, dark place away from sharp objects. Do not vacuum-seal 2WAY Tricot for long periods, as heavy creasing can become permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: How often should I wash my dakimakura cover?

A: If you sleep with it nightly, we recommend washing it every 2 to 4 weeks to remove body oils and sweat. If it is purely a display piece, washing it once every 3 to 6 months to remove surface dust is sufficient.

Q2: Can I iron my body pillow cover if it gets wrinkled?

A: We strongly advise against ironing, as direct heat can melt synthetic fibers and ruin the ink. Usually, simply stretching the cover tightly back over your PP Cotton insert will smooth out any minor wrinkles.

Q3: What should I do if I get a stain on the cover?

A: Spot-treat the stain immediately. Dab (do not aggressively rub) the area with a mild stain remover or a mixture of cold water and gentle detergent. Test the cleaner on a hidden inside seam first to ensure it doesn't bleach the printed colors.
