The Ultimate Dakimakura Commission Guide: Hiring Artists & Writing Briefs

⚡ TL;DR (Dakimakura Commission Cheat Sheet)

  • Finding Artists: Look on VGen, Skeb, or X (Twitter) using tags like #DakimakuraCommission or #抱き枕カバー. Always verify they have drawn full-body proportions before.
  • The Cost: A high-quality, double-sided commercial commission typically ranges from $150 to $500+ depending on the artist's popularity and detail level.
  • The Tech Specs: You must instruct your artist to use RGB color mode and a minimum resolution of 6000x2000 pixels (for a 160x50cm cover).
  • Copy-Paste Template: Scroll down to the bottom of this article for a pre-written technical brief you can send directly to your hired artist!

Want a Custom Body Pillow but Can't Draw?

You have a brilliant idea for an Original Character (OC), a favorite VTuber, or a niche anime waifu/husbando, but you don't have the digital art skills to bring them to life. The solution is commissioning an independent illustrator.

However, drawing a 5-foot-tall custom dakimakura is vastly different from drawing a standard profile picture or bust illustration. As a professional print shop, we frequently see buyers submit commissioned artwork that is incorrectly sized, cut off, or drawn in the wrong color space. Here is how to hire the right artist and ensure they deliver a print-ready file.

Step 1: Finding and Vetting the Right Artist

Not every amazing illustrator makes a great dakimakura artist. The vertical 160x50cm canvas requires a deep understanding of full-body anatomy, foreshortening, and fabric drape.

  • Where to Look: VGen and Skeb are currently the safest platforms with built-in buyer protection. You can also search X (Twitter) for terms like "Dakimakura commission open".
  • Check the Portfolio: Do not hire an artist who only posts headshots or waist-up drawings. Look for artists who have specifically designed body pillows before, or at least excel at full-body character sheets.
  • Understand Licensing: If you are printing a pillow just for your own bed (personal use), standard commission rates apply. If you are an Indie VTuber planning to sell this merch to your fans, you must explicitly pay the artist for a Commercial License.

Step 2: Understanding the Print Requirements

Before you message an artist, you need to know exactly what file specifications to ask for. If the artist delivers a low-resolution file, we cannot magically enhance it for a physical 2WAY Tricot print.

  • Resolution: The canvas must be a minimum of 6000 x 2000 pixels (Targeting 300 DPI for a 160x50cm pillow).
  • Color Mode: The file must be drawn and exported in RGB. Do not let the artist convert it to CMYK, as it will dull the colors during our dye-sublimation process.
  • Bleed Zone: The artist must leave a 2cm safety margin around the entire border. No important details (like hair tips or toes) should touch the absolute edge, or they will be sewn into the zipper track.

Step 3: The Copy-Paste Commission Brief

Communication is the most common point of failure in art commissions. To ensure your artist delivers exactly what our print shop needs, copy and paste this exact template when requesting your commission:

Subject: Dakimakura Commission Request Hello! I love your art style and would like to commission a double-sided Dakimakura (body pillow) design for [Personal Use / Commercial Merch].
