Commissioning Dakimakura Artwork: A Brief Your Artist Can Use

Choose someone whose work fits the project

Look beyond one favorite portrait. Ask whether the artist is comfortable with a long composition and the amount of character detail you want.

You don't need a completely finished layout before contacting them. You do need to explain whether you want one illustration, two different sides or an adaptation of an existing piece. Those are different amounts of work.

Ask what is included in the quote: sketch approvals, revisions, background, final exports and any editable source file. Don't assume a layered file comes with the finished image.

Send this brief before the sketch

Copy the following and replace the brackets:

Project: Artwork for a dakimakura cover.
Cover dimensions: [confirmed length and width].
Sides: [describe each side separately].
Character: [name/version or original-character reference].
References: [labeled links and what each shows].
Pose, outfit and expression: [preferences and anything to avoid].
Composition: [important details that must remain visible].
Use: [personal print, gift or clearly described commercial project].
Delivery: [date to discuss, separate exports and agreed file requirements].
Approvals: [sketch/color/final stages and included revisions].
Permission: [confirm the intended physical printing and any limits].

If a detail matters to you, name it. “Use this image for the jacket, not the pose” avoids a surprisingly easy misunderstanding.

Agree on what happens after approval

The artist's delivery date and the printer's production schedule are separate. Leave room to inspect the exports and ask questions before ordering the cover.

Keep the written agreement. Permission from an illustrator may not cover all underlying character rights; WIPO's copyright FAQ explains why permissions need attention.
