Where to Get Artwork for a Custom Dakimakura

Start with the creator, not the image search result

Image search is useful for finding an artist. It is not a license.

Follow the picture back to the creator's own page or authorized shop. Read the terms attached to that specific image. If they don't explain physical printing, ask before buying or sending the file to a printer.

A useful message is: “I'd like to have this illustration printed on one pillowcase for my own use. Is that allowed, and is a print-size file available?” Describe the real project; don't call a resale order personal use.

Choose the route that fits what you already have

Your starting point What to do next
Your own original drawing Check the layout and export; resolve any third-party elements
A downloadable illustration Check the license, print permission and delivered pixel dimensions
An artist's finished piece Ask about permission and access to a suitable file
No suitable illustration Discuss a commission before ordering the cover

Paying for a file does not necessarily permit every use. Likewise, commissioning fan art does not automatically resolve the underlying character rights. WIPO's explanation of copyright permissions is a useful general starting point, not a ruling on your particular design.

Ask for the actual file

A watermarked shop preview shows what is for sale, not necessarily what you will receive. Ask about the original export before paying. Don't remove a watermark or reconstruct another artist's work to avoid requesting permission.

Open the delivered file and check its dimensions. A drawing can be large enough for a social post yet unsuitable for a long cover. Use the image resolution guide for that separate check.

If you need a new illustration, start with choosing a commission artist. Keep the permission, final export and version notes together so you don't have to reconstruct the agreement later.

Ready to print? Review the custom dakimakura listing after checking both the artwork source and the file.
