Planning OC Artwork for a Dakimakura: Pose, Outfit & Composition

Pick the details that make the character recognizable

Start with the current reference sheet, not every sketch you've ever made. Identify the outfit, hairstyle, colors and distinctive accessories you want in this version.

If you are briefing an artist, label what each reference is for. A previous costume may be useful for the character's face but wrong for this commission. Clear notes help the artist avoid combining different versions.

Test the pose in a tall frame

Place the sketch in a rectangle matching the intended cover's proportions. Check the face, hands, hair, footwear and any wide accessories before detailed painting.

Wings or a long weapon may need a different angle, smaller scale or more surrounding space. Don't squeeze the whole character sideways just to keep every accessory inside the frame. Compare a few rough layouts instead.

If you already have a finished square illustration, that is an adaptation task, not the same as drawing from scratch. Discuss changes with its artist rather than assuming they are part of printing.

Give each side a clear purpose

One side might show the main outfit while the other uses a quieter scene or another expression. These are design choices, not mandatory front-facing and rear-facing views.

A character with asymmetric clothing needs particular care if you consider mirroring. Check which side an accessory belongs on and whether text would reverse.

Review the artwork upload checklist after the composition is approved. Keep production-file checks separate from the sketch discussion.

For commissioned artwork, confirm the intended printing use with the artist. Being the character's creator doesn't by itself explain every term of a separate illustrator's agreement.
