By DakiCustomize Production Team Last updated

⚡ TL;DR (Quick Summary for Fast Ordering)

  • Standard Size: 160cm x 50cm is the industry standard for most anime collectors.
  • Best Fabric: 2WAY Tricot offers maximum elasticity and color vibrancy, while Peach Skin is budget-friendly and durable.
  • Resolution Requirements: Minimum 6000 x 2000 pixels (Optimal for 300 DPI ultra-sharp print: 19000 x 6000 pixels).
  • Color Mode: Keep in standard sRGB / RGB (Do NOT convert to CMYK).
  • File Format: PNG is highly preferred (lossless line-art). High-quality JPG is accepted. (No PSD files).
  • Crucial Rule: Keep faces, hair tips, and signatures at least 2cm (0.8 inches) away from the outer edge to avoid seam cutting.

Quick Specs & Order Checklist

Before uploading your artwork, verify your specs against our print shop standards:

Order Metric Technical Requirement & Recommendation Why It Matters
Resolution Minimum: 6000 × 2000 px
Optimal (300 DPI): 19000 × 6000 px
Ensures razor-sharp details and prevents blurry line-art when printed full scale.
Color Profile sRGB / RGB (Do NOT convert to CMYK) Digital dye-sublimation printers process sRGB / RGB profiles natively. Converting to CMYK causes dull, muddy colors.
Accepted Formats PNG (Preferred) or High-Quality JPG PNG delivers crisp lines without JPEG compression artifacts. We do not accept raw PSD layered files.
Bleed Margin 2cm (approx. 50–100 px padding around borders) Ensures seam stitching doesn't cut off key illustration details or signatures.
Product Components Cover (Pillowcase) + PP Cotton Insert (Sold separately) Ensures you receive a complete pillow setup or just the replacement cover as intended.

Getting a custom anime body pillow (Dakimakura) printed should be an exciting milestone—whether you are an artist bringing your original character to life, or a fan wanting a one-of-a-kind setup.

However, as a specialized sublimation print shop, we frequently see great artwork suffer from common pre-press mistakes: low-resolution upscaling, missing bleed margins, or color shifts from manual CMYK conversions.

Here is our exact 6-step workflow to help you prepare your files, pick the right materials, and order a custom dakimakura without surprises.

Step 1: Pick the Ideal Cover Size (Measure Your Room & Insert)

Don't guess the size from a photo! Dakimakura covers are tailored to fit specific inner pillow inserts.

  • 160cm x 50cm (63" x 19.6") – Industry Standard: Fits 90% of modern Japanese anime body pillows. Best for natural cuddling height and maximum artwork availability.
  • 150cm x 50cm (59" x 19.6") – Compact / Western Standard: Great if you have a smaller bed or already own a standard 50" US body pillow.
  • 180cm x 60cm (71" x 23.6") – The Life-Size "Absolute Unit": Perfect for tall characters or display setups, but requires dedicated space and a matching 180x60 insert.
💡 Print Shop Tip: If you already own a pillow insert at home, unzip it, lay it flat, and measure the seam-to-seam length before placing your cover order.

Step 2: Choose Your Fabric: 2WAY Tricot vs. Peach Skin

The fabric you choose changes both the tactile feel and how the ink locks into the fibers.

  • 2WAY Tricot (2WAY 特里科特): The Gold Standard for Collectors.
    • Feel: Ultra-soft, silky cool to the touch, with 4-way stretch.
    • Print Quality: Sharpest line-art reproduction and vibrant skin tones.
    • Best For: High-detail artwork and serious cuddling comfort.
  • Peach Skin (桃皮绒): Durable & Budget-Friendly.
    • Feel: Micro-brushed woven fabric with a subtle suede-like texture (no stretch).
    • Best For: Daily use, tough durability, or entry-level merch runs.

Step 3: Prepare Your Artwork Like a Pro (Resolution, Color & Bleed)

To get razor-sharp prints without blurry edges, follow these print shop file guidelines:

1. Canvas Resolution (Minimum vs. Optimal)

For a standard 160x50cm cover:

  • Minimum Acceptable Resolution: 6000 x 2000 pixels.
  • Optimal Ultra-Sharp Resolution (300 DPI): 19000 x 6000 pixels.

If your file is smaller than 6000x2000 px, do not simply stretch it in Photoshop. Contact our prepress team for free AI image enhancement before ordering.

2. Keep Files in sRGB / RGB (Do NOT Convert to CMYK!)

Modern digital sublimation printers rely on high-gamut sRGB / RGB color profiles to reproduce electric greens, bright pinks, and delicate skin shading. Converting your artwork to CMYK in drawing software shrinks the color space and makes the printed fabric look dull or muddy. Simply leave your file in standard RGB mode!

3. File Format: PNG Preferred

We recommend submitting lossless PNG files for maximum line clarity. High-quality JPGs are also accepted. Please note: We do not accept layered PSD files. Please export your artwork as a flattened PNG or JPG before uploading.

4. Mind the "2cm Bleed Safety Zone"

During tailoring, roughly 1.5cm to 2cm of fabric along the border will be stitched into the inner seam.

  • Don't: Place character eyes, hair tips, artist signatures, or logo text within 2cm of the canvas edge.
  • Do: Extend background colors/gradients all the way to the canvas border so no raw white fabric shows after stitching.

Step 4: Front & Back File Labeling

Most custom dakimakuras feature dual-sided printing:

  • Clearly label your files: CharacterName_Front.png and CharacterName_Back.png.
  • Ensure both front and back illustrations share the same vertical orientation (e.g., character head positioned at the top for both images).

Step 5: Decide on the Pillow Insert

Remember: Custom dakimakura product listings are for the printed fabric cover.

  • If you already have a 160x50cm insert, you only need to order the cover.
  • If you need a complete pillow, add a high-elasticity PP Cotton Insert to your cart in the exact same dimensions as your selected cover.

Step 6: Final Pre-Checkout Inspection Checklist

  • ☑️ Cover Size & Material: Selected 160x50cm + 2WAY Tricot (or your desired combo)?
  • ☑️ PP Cotton Insert: Added to cart separately if you need a full pillow?
  • ☑️ File Format: Exported as flattened PNG (preferred) or high-res JPG (No PSD files)?
  • ☑️ Resolution Check: Meets the minimum 6000x2000 px requirement (up to 19000x6000 px for 300 DPI)?
  • ☑️ sRGB / RGB Profile: File saved in standard sRGB / RGB color mode (not CMYK)?
  • ☑️ Bleed Safety: Signatures and faces positioned away from the outer 2cm seam?
  • ☑️ Cloud File Links: If sharing via Google Drive / Dropbox, is access set to "Anyone with the link can view"?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What if I only have a low-resolution image from social media?

A: Standard social media previews (e.g., 1200x800 px) will look pixelated on a 160cm body pillow. Contact our support before ordering. We offer free prepress file evaluation and AI vector upscaling to help restore line sharpness whenever possible.

Q2: Why is PNG preferred over JPG or PSD?

A: PNG provides lossless compression, ensuring crisp line-art and clean gradients without JPEG compression noise. PSD files often cause font and layer missing issues during production transfers.

Q3: How long does production and shipping take?

A: Custom printing and tailoring take 2 to 4 business days after file approval. Global shipping typically takes 7 to 10 business days.
