No Dakimakura for Your Favorite Character? Where to Start

By DakiCustomize Production Team Last updated

Check whether the cover is actually unavailable

Search the character's name alongside the series title, including an alternate spelling where relevant. Start with the rights holder's shop, official announcements and the artist's own storefront links.

A missing listing does not tell you whether an item never existed, sold out or was part of a limited preorder. If you find an old announcement, check its date and seller before treating it as something you can still buy. Don't pay an unfamiliar seller just because its mockup shows the right character.

If there is no cover, separate the two jobs

You need an illustration and somewhere to print it. One service does not automatically include the other.

If you already have an approved drawing, compare printers using the printing-service guide. If you have no suitable artwork, the artist-selection guide explains what to discuss before commissioning it.

For a lesser-known character, collect references that identify the version you want: outfit, hairstyle, accessories and colors. Explain any details the artist is unlikely to recognize. A small, clearly labeled reference set is more helpful than an unexplained folder of pictures.

Check the project before buying the print

Before moving ahead, you should be able to answer:

  • Who made the drawing, and what use has been permitted?
  • Is there a full-resolution export, rather than only a preview?
  • Does the composition suit the intended cover?
  • What will appear on each side?

An artist's permission for an illustration does not necessarily settle every right associated with an existing character. Where permission is unclear, seek clarification rather than assuming a personal order is automatically exempt. WIPO's copyright FAQ explains the general permission framework; local rules and the relevant rights holder's terms still matter.
