RGB or CMYK for Dakimakura Printing? Why RGB is Required

The Biggest Myth in Custom Anime Printing

If you have ever taken a graphic design class, you were probably taught a strict rule: RGB is for screens, and CMYK is for physical printing.

While this rule holds true for printing business cards or offset paper posters, it is completely outdated when it comes to high-end custom anime merchandise. Why Dye-Sublimation Requires sRGB / RGB

Printing on premium 2WAY Tricot or Peach Skin fabric is not like printing on paper. We use a process called dye-sublimation.

In this process, special sublimation inks are printed onto transfer paper and then heat-pressed at over 180°C. The heat turns the ink into a gas, which permanently bonds with the polyester fibers of the fabric. Modern sublimation RIP (Raster Image Processor) software is specifically engineered to take high-gamut sRGB / RGB files and translate them directly into the printer's extended ink set (which often includes fluorescent inks like Light Cyan and Light Magenta).

If you convert your file to CMYK in Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint before sending it to us, you are artificially destroying your image's color data. The printer will print exactly what you send—a dull, desaturated image.

Advanced File Prep: Backgrounds, Character Isolation, and Margins

Beyond color modes, getting a flawless print requires precise file structuring. When generating or preparing your artwork—especially if you are creating a dual-sided cover or a cohesive merch line—follow these structural rules:

1. Isolate Characters into Independent Assets

If your front and back designs feature different characters, or if you plan to use the same art for an acrylic keychain, split the characters into separate, independent image files. Do not submit a massive, uncropped canvas with multiple characters scattered across it. Each file should contain exactly one figure, clearly labeled (e.g., Character_Front.png).

2. Unify the Background Color Scheme

For double-sided dakimakura covers, ensure both independent files share a unified background color scheme. A seamless transition between the front and back seams makes the final product look much more professional.

3. Natural Contours over Geometric Cut-offs

Ensure that your illustration utilizes natural contouring rather than harsh geometric boundaries (like forcing the character into a rigid heart or box frame). Elements placed too close to the margins can be incorrectly cropped during the sewing process. Keep all critical details, such as hair tips and signatures, safely within a natural silhouette, away from the 2cm outer bleed edge.

Q1: I draw on an iPad using Procreate. What color profile should I select?

A: When creating a new canvas in Procreate, go to the Color Profile tab and select sRGB (usually sRGB IEC61966-2.1 or similar). Do not select the generic CMYK option. Export your final artwork as a PNG.

Q2: My artist already sent me a CMYK file. Can I just convert it back to RGB?

A: Converting a CMYK file back to RGB will change the file format, but it will not magically restore the lost vivid colors. The data has already been compressed. You must ask the original artist to re-export the file directly from their master project file in RGB mode.

Q3: Why do the colors on my printed cover look slightly different than my phone screen?

A: Every phone and monitor is calibrated differently. OLED screens (like iPhones) artificially boost saturation and contrast. While dye-sublimation is incredibly accurate, printing on soft, matte fabric will naturally diffuse light differently than a backlit glass screen. However, providing an sRGB file guarantees the closest possible match.
