How to Put an Insert into a Dakimakura Cover

Read the size labels on the cover and insert. Matching length without matching width is not enough. Our insert guide explains why a larger insert can strain a smaller cover.
Work on a clean, smooth surface. Make sure both pieces are dry and move sharp jewellery or other snagging items away from the fabric.
Ease the cover over the insert
- Open the zipper fully. Keep loose fabric out of the teeth and check that the opening moves freely.
- Start at the far end. For a bottom opening, guide one end of the insert into the closed end of the cover and line up the corners.
- Feed the rest in gradually. Support the insert with your hands and work the cover over it in small sections. Pull on the fabric gently, not on the zipper slider or stitching.
- Settle the shape. Smooth the cover and redistribute the insert gently so the corners and ends are filled without bunching.
- Close without force. Hold loose fabric clear of the teeth and close the zipper slowly. Stop if it catches.
DakiCustomize’s default zipper is at the bottom. A custom side opening changes how you position the insert; use the actual opening rather than trying to force the bottom-opening steps onto it. The zipper placement guide explains the difference.
If the cover will not close
Check the labels again and look for a corner folded inside, uneven filling or fabric caught near the opening. Do not overfill the insert or try to stretch the cover into a different size.
If the zipper or seams look damaged, contact us with clear photos before attempting a repair. Avoid pliers or other tools that could make the problem worse.
If you still need a matching insert, compare the sizes on the pillow insert page.
